Bayou Community Foundation Announces ANCHOR the Bayou Leadership Cohort
On April 28, 2026, a team of 22 local residents gathered at the Terrebonne Parish Library System South Regional Branch for the first of five ANCHOR Cohort meetings. Representing communities across South Lafourche and South Terrebonne, these leaders came together to explore the challenges facing residents, including housing, community spaces and other issues that impact quality of life. They also examined the assets that strengthen our communities, such as family connections, cultural traditions and the deep sense of place that defines the Bayou Region.
As individuals who live and work in South Lafourche and South Terrebonne, these cohort members serve as trusted voices helping shape solutions, strengthen networks and guide implementation efforts. Through training, leadership development and community engagement activities, they are turning ideas into action while helping ensure community priorities remain at the center of the ANCHOR initiative.
ANCHOR is not only about identifying needs, it is also about building local leadership and community capacity. By investing in the people who know these communities best, the initiative is creating a stronger foundation for future generations. Resilience starts with people. We are not just building programs—we are building people.
WHAT'S NEXT
As the ANCHOR initiative moves forward, the focus will remain on strengthening local leadership, expanding community partnerships and turning community priorities into action.
Cohort members and partners will work together to identify and implement pilot projects that address local needs while building on existing strengths. Efforts will also center on strengthening long-term resilience across South Lafourche and South Terrebonne by identifying sustainable funding opportunities and fostering the relationships needed to support lasting community impact.
Resilience is more than infrastructure.
Our people, our voices, and our social resilience are essential. Roads and levees matter—but so do people, relationships, leadership, and community voice.
The ANCHOR the Bayou Process
ANCHOR the Bayou (Addressing Needs and Capacity in Historically Overlooked Regions of the Bayou) is Bayou Community Foundation’s community-led initiative in coordination with The Water Institute’s Community Resilience Center Catalyst Program to build long-term resilience in South Lafourche and South Terrebonne.
Phase 1: Needs Assessment. A community-wide survey, listening sessions, and focus groups were conducted in 2025, to seek residents’ input on local challenges, strengths, and opportunities for building long-term resilience in these historically overlooked bayou communities. Strong family ties, cultural traditions, and churches and local nonprofit organizations were identified as key community assets.
Phase 2: Strategic Planning. This valuable resident input was compiled into the ANCHOR the Bayou strategic plan, released June 1, 2026, that includes priorities for resilience and actionable strategies.
Phase 3: Capacity Building. In May 2026, the ANCHOR the Bayou Leadership Cohort was named. This group of dedicated community members who will help guide and implement resilience initiatives in their neighborhoods.
Phase 4: Project Implementation. Beginning in Fall 2026, ANCHOR the Bayou partners and the Leadership Cohort will identify and develop pilot projects to address priorities in the strategic plan.
Listening to Our Communities
In April and May 2025, BCF hosted a series of ANCHOR the Bayou Community Open Houses in the towns of Cut Off, Bourg and East Houma, where neighbors shared stories, voiced concerns and offered ideas on critical issues like housing, transportation, health care, food security and economic opportunity.
These open, welcoming gatherings provided a space for residents to connect with each other and with community leaders, sharing what is working in our region, identifying the challenges that remain and offering hopeful solutions to build a coastal community WHERE ALL CAN THRIVE!
Why ANCHOR the Bayou Matters
Your voice shapes the future. The conversations we have had so far are just the beginning of a long-term effort to strengthen our Bayou communities by:
✅ Identifying key challenges and needs
✅ Shaping future solutions and BCF initiatives
✅ Building connections among residents, nonprofits, and local leaders
This Project is Made Possible By Community Partnerships
We are grateful to the Community Resilience Center at The Water Institute for partnering with BCF on this important project and to the American Red Cross of Louisiana for providing meals during these community gatherings. We would also like to give special thanks to Hope Community Church, Popie’s Palace, the Cut Off Youth Center and the Terrebonne Parish Library System’s South Regional Branch for hosting these conversations.
